Fit And Feel
Initial thoughts from just putting the shoe on it feels lightweight, stable, and highly cushioned. The sizing for me like all running shoes in 2022 is that I have had to go up to a UK 9 from the previous sizing of a UK 8. The fit is snug around the heel but with the soft flexible heel counter this reduces pressure on the Achilles tendon insertion, which for me with a history of insertional Achilles tendon problems is great as there is no discomfort. The tongue is well padded and when laced is comfortable with a good secure fit around the midfoot region. There is plenty of room in the toe box both in width and depth and the toes did not feel squashed at all.
The shoe overall feels very stable underfoot, especially around the mid-forefoot region. The one thing I would say is that when standing and walking in them it does feel like you are going back onto heels more. However, this should not deter anyone, as when running in them this feeling does not occur. A stiff mid-forepart region of the shoe combined with Hoka’s early stage met rocker (toe spring) transitions you through more smoothly. Making for a very comfortable ride when putting in the daily miles.
The Zonal outsole rubber provides good durability and certainly minimises premature wear, which can be seen in other running shoes with minimal to no outsole rubber. There were no pressure points at all when running and the upper/lacing kept a secure fit of the foot in the shoe with no rubbing or irritation throughout. From the off running in these shoes was comfortable and no bedding in was required.
Performance
The shoe is a comfortable, lightweight mileage shoe with a firm ride. Due to the early met rocker, the rocker is less aggressive than some other models and brands but allows for an early transition through gait, which is smoother than the more aggressive rocker shoes. This shoe is definitely a mileage shoe as it does feel a little flat and not overly responsive especially when running at faster speeds, such as tempo running or quicker.
Who Would Suit This Shoe?
For me this shoe is a perfect mileage shoe for longer road runs and easy training days, with its blend of comfort, stability, and reduced weight from that of other maximal cushioned shoes. For runners looking for a shoe where comfort is important, and speed is not the primary goal the Hoka Arahi 6 is worth trying.
